If Your Toilet Isn’t Working Right What Can You Do?

March 24, 2010

Many homeowners never give any thought to the problems that can arise with their plumbing, especially their toilet. Toilets are usually forgotten, as long as they work the way they are supposed to.

However the moment one of your toilets overflows, stops flushing like it is supposed to, or just keeps running, you realize your toilet needs to be looked at by someone who knows about toilets. Unlike water heaters, many basic toilet issues can be addressed by an informed householder.

Low flow toilets are often harder to fix or adjust. They use a mechanism that provides extra pressure to a smaller amount of water, making the bowl flush cleanly while using less water. Many of these toilets use a cylinder in the water tank to add pressure to the flushing action.

This force can often be adjusted if there is not enough flush pressure by using a dial or crank in the tank. Unlike the relatively simple parts of a regular flow toilet, these mechanisms can be difficult to replace or fix yourself. Like trying to fix your own water heater, you can do more damage by taking it apart and attempting to repair it. This is especially true if you’re attempting a fix without the right tools.

One very common issue with regular flow toilets occurs when the toilet no longer flushes properly. This can be caused by a broken trip lever, a broken or disconnected chain, or a malfunctioning rubber stopper.

The trip lever is a small plastic or metal arm that attaches to the flush handle. It is not unusual for the chain connecting the trip lever and rubber stopper to come unhooked. The rubber stopper plugs the drain in the bottom of the tank. When the stopper is pulled up water flows out and into the bowl. Sometimes a rubber stopper can be misaligned or corroded. Replacement parts for a low flow toilet can usually be found at a hardware store.

If your toilet has a problem you feel you can’t fix yourself you should contact a professional plumber. In the Joliet and Orchard Park Illinois area for Joliet water heaters contact Courtesy Plumbing - Plumbing service available 24/7/365.
