Aside from the fact that woodworking is an ancient and rewarding occupation, do you know about the danger of dust and sharp objects? Most shop enthusiasts assume an attitude of extra care when they work around sharp tools. Do you know how much damage dust particles from wood while cutting with a circluar saw can do to your lungs? If you’re new to woodworking, the dangers of cutting blades and the danger of dust and other airborne debris may have escaped you.

Shop dust is a major health problem. It’s true that debris doesn’t cause instant pain such as cutting off your thumb will, but over time, it can do much more damage. You gently inch your circular saw blade into the sweet smelling soft pine. It’s then that hazardous dust pieces fly into the air. Why is this dangerous? According to the US Department of Labor, dust particles, from woodworking, become airborne, and can cause respiratory symptoms of allergic reactions such as mucosal and non-allergic respiratory warning signs of cancer.

It appears that whether you’re in your garage, basement workshop, or even in the out of doors, the hobby of woodworking aught to add to your quality of life, not takes it away. This is why all the recent interest in shop debris collection units. The danger of dust includes the possibility of cancer. It’s a fact that the wood particles themselves don’t necessarily cause the type of cancer it is the microorganisms and chemicals used in the making of some grades of wood that are the problems.
